Valve: We're 'Absolutely Not' Making Left 4 Dead 3
Tempo: Jan. 21, 2020Rumors swirled about a new 'Left 4 Dead' game, but Valve released a statement denying
any active development.Valve did consider a next-generation installment several years ago, however.
You won't see a new Left 4 Dead game anytime soon, and Valve might not ever release one.
It explored the possibility several years ago, but now the publisher-developer wants to make it
clear that there isn't a next-generation installment in development.
Rumors suggested that Valve would release a virtual reality-based installment. Alleged concept
art leaked on YouTube a few days ago, and then HTC Vive's Alvin Wang Graylin shared slides
referring to "L4D3." Valve collaborates with HTC on the Vive platform , with the rumor mill
generating plenty of hype, Valve felt the need to step in and confirm that Left 4 Dead 3 does not exist.
Valve understands that fans desire a new Left 4 Dead game and blames that long-held feeling
for all the misinformation. In a statement to IGN, Valve denied any active development. "We've
seen rumors to this effect for the last couple of months, " a spokesperson said. "We did briefly
explore some Left 4 Dead next-gen opportunities a few years ago. But we are absolutely not
working on anything L4D-related now, and haven't for years."
The Left 4 Dead franchise hasn't earned any attention in seven years. Valve introduced the first
game in 2008, and a second was released a year later. Valve then rolled out downloadable content
through Left 4 Dead 2, but fans expected Left 4 Dead 3 and other installments on the PlayStation
4 and Xbox One. Now, they may never get another sequel.
Valve will, however, release new Dota and Half-Life games this year. Dota Underlords arrives in
February, and then VR-based Half-Life: Alyx follows in March. Beyond that, Valve's pipeline doesn't
include any confirmed games. So it could spend more time developing downloadable content, or there
might be some unannounced titles in development that'll get announced at a later date.
